Multi-Level Messaging Overview
Information sharing is a priority across the defense and intelligence communities, and the primary mechanism for information sharing is mail and messaging. However, current mail and messaging systems are not optimized around the needs of these two communities:

1. Commercial mail and messaging products do not have the necessary data integration and content controls for attribute-based information sharing involving complex policies.
2. Existing custom messaging systems often predate the web era, and have architectures that do not support SOA, coupled to interfaces that cannot compete with consumer web 2.0 applications.

In addition, both COTS and custom mail and messaging systems are single-domain. Users from different parts of the defense and intelligence communities can become isolated in ‘domain pools’ with little interconnectivity. At the same time, many users must contend with multiple inboxes for mail and messaging, accessed through separate interfaces.

BlueSpace TransMail Trusted Edition is the first truly multi-level COTS mail and messaging platform that supports a unified enterprise policy and a single interface for the end user. It does this by leveraging the BlueSpace Trusted Service Bus and Trusted Client Framework. TransMail Trusted Edition supports rigorous mandatory access controls between different security levels, while also supporting attribute-based controls based on meta tags and XML within a single security level.

BlueSpace TransMail can also be integrated with external messaging systems, including SMTP and x.400 based systems via gateways.

While currently limited to messaging, BlueSpace is investigating extending its MLS capabilities to include calendar and task management, as well as providing connectors to other COTS email platforms such as Microsoft Exchange.
